Chairman’s welcome: Breeding for a Brighter Future

It is a real honour to step into the role of Chairman of the British Cattle Breeders Club. Firstly, I must congratulate Alex and the committee on doing an amazing job with last year’s conference. It will be a hard act to follow. BCBC has played a big part in my own journey in the industry, so to now help guide the Club forward, especially under the theme Breeding for a Brighter Future, feels both exciting and deeply meaningful.

My passion has always been breeding and the technologies that help us make better, faster, more informed decisions. Whether it is genomics, fertility tools, data systems or the next wave of precision breeding, these innovations are reshaping what is possible on farm. One of my key priorities this year is to make sure our members feel confident, connected and equipped to use these tools to their full potential.

Of course, we continue to face pressure from outside the industry. Emissions, sustainability and welfare are all topics of concern. As a club we are well placed to help farmers address those issues by making good breeding decisions, and it is more important than ever that we tell our story clearly and proudly. Responsible breeding is central to producing healthy, efficient animals and high-quality food, and BCBC has a vital role in championing that message.

What I value most about this Club is the people. Farmers, researchers, students and industry partners come together with genuine curiosity and a willingness to share. That sense of community is what keeps us moving forward, and I am committed to strengthening it throughout the year.

I am looking forward to meeting many of you, hearing your ideas and working together as we continue to breed for a brighter future.
